Four Reasons to Strength Train and Two NEW MECHA Offerings

At MECHA we offer multiple modalities with which to strengthen your body and help you live your best life. We offer RESISTANCE, a joint friendly high intensity strengthening version of pilates. We offer CARDIO + STRENGTH, a high intensity low impact combination of cardio training and low weight strength exercises. And we now offer two new options: STRENGTH and BARBELL to complement your current favorite classes at MECHA!

BARBELL is a weightlifting class focusing on the 6 functional movements: squat, hinge, lunge, push, pull, anti rotational core. This class is offered in a cycle to allow all levels to join and grow their lifting practice.

STRENGTH is a new class we are trialing! We will focus more on slower, controlled movements with heavier weights moved in the vertical plane. This is similar to BARBELL and will include the 6 functional movements: squat, hinge, lunge, push, pull, anti rotational core, but will not have the progressive overload of a cycle. Designed for first and long time strength devotees.

Every class MECHA offers challenges and strengthens you in a different way. We recommend a combination of all of them for most people. Below is some of the science behind why MECHA feels strength training is so important and why it’s a great component of your best health outcomes!

1.Build Muscle Mass and Improve Bone Density

One of the most significant changes that occur as we age is a loss of muscle mass and strength, known as sarcopenia. This loss can lead to a decrease in mobility, balance, and an increased risk of falls and fractures. However, strength training has been shown to be the most effective way to counteract sarcopenia and maintain muscle mass and strength.

Additionally, strength training has been shown to improve bone density, which is critical for preventing osteoporosis and fractures. A study published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research found that strength training was effective in increasing bone density in postmenopausal women.

2. Boost Metabolism and Fat Loss

As we age, our metabolism slows down, which can make it more challenging to maintain a healthy weight. However, strength training has been shown to increase muscle mass, which, in turn, boosts metabolism and promotes fat loss.

A study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that strength training was effective in reducing body fat and increasing lean body mass.

3. Improve Heart Health and Reduce the Risk of Chronic Disease

Strength training has been shown to have many health benefits beyond muscle and bone health. For example, it can improve heart health by reducing blood pressure, increasing good cholesterol levels, and decreasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Additionally, strength training has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and some types of cancer.

4. Strength is Fun!

Being strong is fun! At MECHA we work hard in all of our classes and have fun doing it! All of our classes, including our new offerings, will put a smile on your face while you sweat with friends and push your mind and body beyond what you thought possible!

Strength training in all of its forms is super important to staying injury free, healthy, and again your best!
