Why the name "Pazuzu"?

Pazuzu

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

In Sumerian and Akkadian mythology Pazuzu was the king of the demons of wind, and son of the god Hanbi. For the Sumerians he also represented the southwestern wind, bearer of storms. An amulet representing the demon, often as a pendant, was used as a protection against him. In art he is depicted with the body of a man, the head of a man and the face of a lion, talons instead of feet, two pairs of wings, the right hand upward, and the left hand downward; the position of the hands means respectively life and death (or creation and destruction).

Pazuzu in Movies
At the beginning of the book and film The Exorcist (1973), when the priest who is later going to perform the exorcism is amid the Mesopotamian desert, the figure that threatens him, seemingly an illusion, is Pazuzu. It is also Pazuzu that is supposed to have posessed Regan.

Pazuzu in Television
Pazuzu appeared in the Futurama (animated series) episode "Teenage Mutant Leela's Hurdles,". Pazuzu was the name of the gargoyle created by Professor Farnsworth at the beginning of the episode. Pazuzu escaped, causing the Professor to go in search of him but returned to save him at the conclusion, earning his freedom. No reason was given why Pazuzu would need to earn his freedom.

Note: It was this episode, with the Professor plaintively shouting "Pazuuu-zuuuu! PaZUUUU-ZUUUU!" that inspired us to name our dog "Pazuzu".
